NHRC Takes Cognizance of Gas Leak Tragedy at Pharmaceutical Plant in Andhra Pradesh

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of a tragic media report involving the death of two employees and the hospitalization of another after a gas leak at a pharmaceutical effluent treatment plant in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, on 11 June 2025.

According to initial reports, the workers collapsed during their night shift after allegedly inhaling poisonous gas suspected to have been released during the waste treatment process.

The Commission has observed that the reported incident raises grave concerns regarding the violation of human rights and workplace safety. In response, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and the Superintendent of Police, Anakapalli, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC has asked for updates on the medical condition of the surviving worker, the outcome of any official investigation, and details about any compensation offered to the injured individual or the next of kin of the deceased workers.

This intervention reinforces the Commission’s commitment to ensuring safe work environments and accountability in industrial operations that impact worker health and safety.
