Gujarat Tops India’s Processed Potato Production 48.59 Lakh Tons in 2024–25

In a remarkable boost to India’s agri-export economy, Gujarat has achieved a record-breaking 48.59 lakh tons of potato production in 2024–25, solidifying its status as the country’s leading producer of processed-grade potatoes used in French fries, wafers, and frozen snacks.

Banaskantha Leads the Charge

Banaskantha district alone contributed 18.70 lakh tons, marking the highest production in the state. With a cultivated area of 61,016 hectares and an average productivity of 30.65 tons per hectare, Banaskantha topped the state charts, followed closely by Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts.

10X Growth in Two Decades

In 2004–05, Gujarat’s processed potato output was less than 1 lakh ton with just 4,000 hectares under cultivation. Today, the area under cultivation has expanded to 37,000 hectares, producing 11.5 lakh tons of processed-grade potatoes. Gujarat has now surpassed Uttar Pradesh and Punjab in this segment.

Global Demand for Gujarat’s Crisp Potatoes

The state’s north—thanks to favorable soil, climate, and advanced storage—has become a hub for Lady Rosetta, Kufri Chipsona, and Santana varieties. These are in high demand by QSR chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Domino’s as well as international frozen food markets, particularly in the Middle East.

Support from the Government and Industry

Thanks to initiatives under PM Narendra Modi’s vision for value-added agriculture and the leadership of CM Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat’s agricultural policies and backing from the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation have empowered farmers to focus on high-yield, export-grade produce.

Gujarat now not only meets India’s French fries and wafer demand but is also a major exporter of processed potatoes globally.
