TDB Backs AI-Powered Blood Testing Device for Affordable Rural Healthcare

Indigenous Innovation for Primary Healthcare

The Technology Development Board (TDB), Department of Science & Technology, has signed an agreement with Primary Healthtech Pvt. Ltd., a New Delhi-based startup, to support the development of an AI-powered, IoT-enabled point-of-care blood testing device. This initiative aims to bring affordable and accessible diagnostics to underserved populations across India.

The Mobilab Device

Founded by IIT Guwahati alumni Sahil Jagnani and Ankit Choudhury, the company has developed the Mobilab device — a portable, battery-operated clinical chemistry analyzer. Using AI/ML algorithms, it can test over 25 critical health parameters related to the kidney, liver, heart, vitamins, and even cancer.

Patents and Trials

  • Holds a patent transferred from IIT Guwahati for a transmittance-based point-of-care quantification system.
  • Filed six additional patents covering optical systems, integrated mixers, assay development, and centrifuges.
  • Successfully trialed on 10,000 patients, with a CDSCO license now secured for manufacturing.

Next-Gen Features

The project will now enhance the prototype (M1) to perform five simultaneous tests, reducing waiting times. Planned tests include Hemoglobin, Creatinine, Bilirubin, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Uric Acid, Glucose, and GGT.

Government’s Perspective

Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, highlighted the national priority of rural healthcare access, noting that this project strengthens India’s position in developing indigenous, AI-powered diagnostic solutions.

Industry Impact

Primary Healthtech expressed gratitude, stating that TDB’s support will help scale Mobilab from lab innovation to commercial deployment. The goal is to ensure advanced diagnostics are available at the point of care — “anywhere in India”.

Driving Atmanirbhar Bharat

This collaboration represents another step in India’s vision for self-reliance in medical technology, aligning with Atmanirbhar Bharat and expanding India’s global presence in affordable healthcare innovation.
