Gujarat Govt Replaces Open Lines with MVCC for Safer Power
To reduce frequent power outages and improve safety, the Gujarat government has replaced open agricultural power lines with **MVCC (Medium Voltage Covered Conductor)** cables. In Surat district alone, **422 km** of open lines have been converted over the past two years.
Cost, Coverage & District-Wise Details
The project in Surat cost around **₹39.17 crore**. Other districts benefiting include Navsari (241 km, ₹22.47 crore), Panchmahal (91 km, ₹9.03 crore), Chhota Udepur (88 km, ₹8.70 crore), and Narmada (86 km, ₹8.19 crore).
Benefits: Fewer Outages, Greater Safety
According to Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, regions using MVCC cables have seen a **70-80% reduction** in power interruptions. The new lines are safer for agricultural areas, since MVCC cables are insulated and less prone to damage from trees, birds, storms, or accidental contact.
Why MVCC Matters for Surat & Beyond
- By replacing bare conductors, MVCC reduces the risk of electrical accidents and short circuits.
- It helps in reducing power theft and improving reliability—even during adverse weather.
- Environmental as well as social benefits: less tree trimming/cutting, safer for wildlife.
Other Districts Also on Board
While Surat leads with 422 km replaced, the similar work in other districts shows the government’s statewide push to modernize power distribution infrastructure.
