Surat Proudly Maintains Top-Three Clean Air Status
Surat, known as the “diamond city,” has been ranked among the top three cities nationally in the Swachh Vayu Survekshan for the second year in a row. This honour makes Surat the only city from Gujarat to be recognised in this year’s national clean air survey.
Awards Presented by Union Minister
The award was presented in New Delhi at the Ganga Auditorium, Indira Gandhi Bhavan. Union Environment, Forests & Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav felicitated Surat’s representatives – Mayor Dakshesh Mawani and Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal – in the presence of national dignitaries.
Significance for Gujarat and Clean Air Programme
Surat’s repeated ranking reflects continued progress under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). It demonstrates the city’s efforts in pollution control, monitoring, clean air policies and civic participation.
Challenges Ahead & What Makes Surat Stand Out
- Surat has to maintain and improve measures like reducing vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and dust control to keep its ranking.
- Civic engagement, real-time air quality monitoring and rapid response to air pollution alerts will be key.
- Being the only city from Gujarat in the top three sets a benchmark for others in the state to scale up clean-air initiatives.
