Honouring Heroes Through Education
In a notable curriculum update, NCERT has introduced new chapters on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma in this academic year’s school textbooks.
Details of the New Inclusion
- Class VIII (Urdu): Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw – India’s first five-star general, celebrated for his leadership in the 1971 war.
- Class VII (Urdu): Brigadier Mohammad Usman – Posthumous Maha Vir Chakra recipient, honoured for his valour during the 1947–48 conflict.
- Class VIII (English): Major Somnath Sharma – The first Param Vir Chakra awardee, known for his bravery in defending Srinagar Airport in 1947.
Why This Matters
The Defence Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and NCERT, has made these additions to foster stories of resilience, empathy, emotional intelligence, and the importance of contributing to nation-building. The initiative also aligns with efforts to integrate the National War Memorial (NWM) into educational content.
Building Patriotism in Classrooms
By learning about these national heroes—known for their sacrifice and leadership—students are encouraged to internalise values of courage and responsibility while understanding India’s military heritage in a meaningful context.
