Indian Railways to Install CCTV Cameras in All Coaches and Locos to Boost Passenger Safety

In a major step to bolster security, Indian Railways has announced the installation of CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives. This initiative follows successful trials in Northern Railway and aims to deter criminal activity while enhancing the safety of millions of daily passengers.

Widespread Installation Across All Coaches and Locos

Each railway coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras—two near each entrance. Additionally, every locomotive will feature six cameras, strategically placed to cover front, rear, and side views. Each cab will also include desk-mounted microphones to aid in real-time audio monitoring.

High-Tech Surveillance with AI Integration

The Ministry confirmed that the CCTV systems will be STQC-certified and designed for high-speed functionality (over 100 kmph) and low-light visibility. Railways is also exploring AI-powered analytics under the IndiaAI Mission to enhance incident detection, behavior analysis, and emergency response.

Focus on Passenger Privacy

The surveillance will be limited to common movement areas near doors to respect privacy. The data will assist in identifying miscreants and organized criminal activity while upholding the dignity and safety of travelers.

Ministers Review Progress

Railways Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and MoS Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu recently reviewed the progress of this rollout in a high-level meeting. They emphasized the use of best-in-class equipment and urged officials to expedite the project across all zones.

This modernization reflects the Indian Railways’ growing commitment to providing a secure, technologically advanced, and commuter-friendly experience.
