Since the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017, Gujarat has emerged as one of the most efficient and transparent states in terms of tax collection and economic management. The GST system eliminated multiple overlapping taxes like VAT, CST, octroi, and excise duties, making tax calculation and filing more accessible to businesses and consumers alike.
In FY 2024–25, Gujarat recorded an impressive ₹1,36,748 crore in total GST revenue, registering a year-on-year increase of ₹11,579 crore. With this figure, Gujarat stands third nationwide in state-wise GST contributions and holds an 8.2% share in India’s domestic GST collections.
Gujarat also showed a remarkable increase in the number of registered taxpayers—from 5.15 lakh at the time of GST implementation to over 12.46 lakh in 2024–25. This 145% growth positions the state as third in the country for the number of GST registrants and highlights its expanding economic activity and taxpayer discipline.
In terms of SGST and IGST collections, Gujarat earned ₹73,200 crore in FY 2024–25, up ₹8,752 crore from the previous year. The state recorded a 13.6% growth in these categories, well above the national average of 10.31%, indicating a robust and consistent economic performance.
Gujarat also led the country in the number of e-way bills generated, with over 13.98 crore bills created by suppliers in 2024–25. The state ranks first in supplier-based e-way bill generation, second in bill value, and third in total bill count nationally—underscoring its digital adoption and logistic transparency.
On the compliance front, Gujarat’s performance in GST return filing is equally commendable. It achieved an 88.9% compliance rate for GSTR-3B returns and 85.5% for GSTR-1 returns, placing it among the top-performing states in the country.
Moreover, Gujarat ranks second in the country on the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for GST implementation, with 71.69 points. It secured the top spot in 9 out of 22 metrics, just behind Maharashtra, which scored 73.93.
By simplifying taxation, boosting transparency, and leading in digital tax administration, Gujarat has laid a strong foundation for inclusive and sustainable economic development.
