Gujarat Govt Offers 80% Stamp Duty Waiver on Housing Society Allotment Transfers

Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel has announced a major relief in stamp duty charges for property transfers made via allotment letters or share certificates in housing societies, associations, and non-trading cooperatives. This decision benefits thousands of middle-income families across the state.

Under the new policy, the payable stamp duty on such transfers will be reduced by 80%, meaning only 20% of the original duty amount will be collected. This waiver will apply under Section 9(a) of the Gujarat Stamp Act, 1958.

The Revenue Department clarified that this concession will ease the financial burden on families handling internal property transfers that previously attracted full duty and penalties. With the revised provisions, people will now only pay the revised 20% base duty and applicable minimal penalty—eliminating the earlier excess burden.

CM Patel’s decision was motivated by numerous public and legislative appeals, reflecting his sensitive and citizen-friendly approach to governance. This initiative particularly addresses concerns of housing affordability and reduces complications in internal society transfers.

It is important to note that this benefit applies exclusively to cases involving allotment letters or share certificates issued by housing societies, associations, and non-trading cooperatives. The government will issue a formal notification outlining the policy’s terms and applicability shortly.
