Gujarat has become the first state in India to take the lead in the national Cruise Tourism Mission, leveraging its 2,340 km long coastline to promote cruise tourism and unlock new economic opportunities. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state is actively shaping national cruise policy and infrastructure planning.
As part of this initiative, the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) organized a one-day workshop on May 6, bringing together key stakeholders. The workshop focused on forming a framework for Gujarat’s cruise shipping policy aligned with the national agenda. Officials including Captain Banshiwa Ladwa and GMB CEO Shri Rajkumar Beniwal (IAS) highlighted Gujarat’s growing maritime potential and the emerging economic prospects in cruise tourism.
During the workshop, discussions covered policy frameworks, infrastructure upgrades, immigration, and efficient coastal operations. Leaders from Mumbai Port, Cochin FRRO, and Goa International Cruise Terminal offered strategic insights. Gujarat Tourism MD Sufi Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak (IAS) presented plans to develop cruise-ready tourist destinations, while IPS officer Shri Krishnaraj R. stressed the need for digital immigration systems.
Chief Secretary of Ports and Transport, Shri Ashwini Kumar, reaffirmed Gujarat’s commitment to becoming a leading cruise tourism hub. He stated that Gujarat’s accessibility, port infrastructure, and policy drive serve as a model for other Indian states aiming for coastal tourism excellence.
Key cruise circuit proposals include Diu, Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Okha, and Paddala Island, organized in three clusters:
- Paddala Island – Rann of Kutch
- Porbandar – Veraval – Diu
- Dwarka – Okha – Jamnagar
Each cluster focuses on offering rich religious, natural, and cultural attractions within a 100 km radius.
Gujarat is also set to contribute significantly to the national mission by planning a dedicated cruise terminal. As other major ports like Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai, and Mormugao are already advancing cruise infrastructure, Gujarat aims to join this momentum and expand India’s presence in global cruise tourism.
This workshop and strategic planning mark a key milestone. With clear vision, robust support, and coordinated execution, Gujarat is poised to become a frontrunner in India’s cruise tourism landscape.
