Baroda Govt Servants Cooperative Society Celebrates 115 Years of Service & Solidarity

The Government Servants Cooperative Credit Society of Vadodara marks its 115th anniversary this year, carrying forward a legacy of financial empowerment and cooperative strength for public servants. Established in 1910 under the guidance of then Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad, the society was founded by 13 officers of Baroda State and has now grown to over 11,000 members.

Initially set up to help government employees through small loans, the society has played a crucial role in turning dreams of homeownership into reality and providing support during health emergencies, marriages, and education expenses. Today, it offers loans of up to ₹20 lakh, earning accolades for best practices in cooperative financial management.

The society’s first president was Shri Purushottam Nathalal Desai, under the initiative of Shri Anant Narayan Datar. It began operations from a rented house in Shahi Pol and has since moved to its own office building developed in 1957 with a land purchase of ₹9,000.

Shri Prataprao S. Bhoite, who has served as president since 1992, stated that the society’s loan capacity was ₹2,500 until 1975 and gradually increased to ₹15,000 by 1995. With growing financial strength and disciplined governance, the society today disburses high-value loans and has emerged as the top performer in Gujarat’s cooperative credit sector.

From just 13 founding members to now serving over 11,347 government and semi-government employees across departments like revenue, education, police, and universities, the society continues to be a pillar of economic resilience. In the last financial year, it earned a net profit of ₹186 lakh.

Recognized during Gujarat’s “Cooperative Fortnight”, this institution stands as a symbol of sustainable growth and the cooperative spirit envisioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad.
