Myanmar’s Acting President U Myint Swe Dies at 74

A Ceremonial Leader No More

Acting President of Myanmar, U Myint Swe, passed away on the morning of August 7, 2025, in Naypyidaw at the age of 74. The National Defence and Security Council has announced that he will receive a state funeral in his honour.

Health Battles Behind the Curtains

Myint Swe had been battling Parkinson’s disease and related neurological conditions. After undergoing treatment in Singapore and Myanmar, his condition deteriorated in July, with symptoms like severe weight loss, cognitive decline, and loss of appetite. He had been admitted to intensive care earlier that month.

Long Absence, Symbolic Presence

Serving primarily in ceremonial roles, Myint Swe was appointed Acting President in February 2021, following a military-led coup. The move enabled the military to seize control through the National Defence and Security Council, with real power resting in the hands of Commander‑in‑Chief Min Aung Hlaing. Myint Swe had been on medical leave since July 2024, delegating his duties to the junta leader.

Legacy Amid Political Turbulence

  • A former army general, he held several powerful posts, including Yangon Chief Minister and First Vice President under the quasi-civilian government.
  • Known for his role in the Saffron Revolution crackdown and internal military purges, he was seen as a loyalist propping up authoritarian rule.
  • Internationally, Myint Swe faced U.S. sanctions following the 2021 crackdown on democratic leaders.

What Comes Next

With his demise, Myanmar’s junta is likely to consolidate authority further, with Min Aung Hlaing already holding both military and executive power. Observers remain skeptical of any democratic transition amid ongoing unrest and calls for fair elections.
