Indian Navy and BEL Partner for NMDA Project to Strengthen Coastal and Maritime Security

In a major move toward reinforcing India’s maritime and coastal defense systems, the Indian Navy has officially signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, and Shri Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL.

The NMDA Project represents a significant leap in India’s strategic maritime infrastructure. It is designed to integrate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of critical maritime data across a wide range of stakeholders, including naval and civilian agencies. The core objective is to ensure seamless and real-time maritime domain awareness to strengthen surveillance, coordination, and quick response mechanisms.

Central to the initiative is the upgrade of the existing National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (NC3I) Network into the advanced NMDA Network. This includes the deployment of cutting-edge AI-enabled software for smarter data processing and threat detection. Furthermore, the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) in Gurugram — the nerve center of the current NC3I network — will be transformed into a Multi-Agency NMDA Centre, with dedicated representatives from various national defense and security organizations.

The NMDA Project will be delivered on a turnkey basis, ensuring a comprehensive end-to-end solution managed directly by the Indian Navy. The initiative not only underscores India’s commitment to maritime security but also showcases the power of collaboration between the public defense sector and India’s strategic industries like BEL.

With growing geopolitical activity and increased maritime traffic in the Indian Ocean Region, the NMDA Project is expected to significantly enhance India’s coastal surveillance capabilities. It also reflects the broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision of promoting indigenous defense solutions backed by technological innovation.
