The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India released a landmark report titled “ZET Adoption in India and Its Impact on Emission and Energy” on July 1, 2025. The study focuses on the future of freight transport in India and explores how Battery Electric Trucks (BETs) can lead the shift to a low-emission economy.
The report outlines how India’s freight sector—driven largely by Medium and Heavy-Duty Trucks (M&HDTs)—accounts for nearly 70% of logistics operations but also consumes around 40% of transport fuel and significantly contributes to emissions. Transitioning this segment to Zero-Emission Trucks (ZETs) is projected to dramatically reduce India’s environmental footprint by mid-century.
Due to current constraints in green hydrogen production and limited fueling infrastructure, BETs are seen as the most viable ZET option in the short to medium term. The report draws from expert interviews across OEMs, fleet operators, and government bodies, combined with historical data from SIAM, MoRTH, MoPNG, and other sources.
Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasized: “The adoption of ZETs is a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing energy security. Electrifying freight is pivotal to our net-zero journey.”
The report’s findings underscore the importance of early-stage policy support, such as:
- Targeted fiscal incentives
- Custom-built electric truck platforms for Indian conditions
- Scalable charging infrastructure
These measures can build market confidence and trigger large-scale adoption across India’s freight corridors. The report also highlights the role of public-private collaboration and data-driven policymaking in transforming India’s logistics sector.
