Dalai Lama Arrives in Zanskar to Inaugurate Summer Philosophical Symposium

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was accorded a grand welcome in Zanskar on July 21, marking the beginning of the KarGön Summer Philosophical Symposium 2025. The warm reception, organized by the Kargil District Administration, included senior officials and thousands of devotees who gathered at Karsha Phodang in Padum to greet him.

Festive Arrival and Welcome Ceremony

After a two-day weather delay, the Dalai Lama flew into Padum by helicopter and was welcomed at the helipad by the District Commissioner, SSP, council members, and community representatives. A vibrant procession followed his motorcade, complete with traditional music and dance leading up to the Karsha Temple .

Symposium Inauguration and Message

At the newly inaugurated Karsha Phodang, His Holiness emphasized interfaith harmony and heartfelt education. He praised the communal unity in Zanskar, highlighting respect between Buddhist and Muslim communities. The symposium, a platform for spiritual dialogue, ethical learning, and SEE-Learning initiatives, includes monks, nuns, and over 27 local schools.

Community Engagement and Future Impact

Thousands of people attended, with many moved to tears of joy after the earlier disappointment from travel delays. His message encouraged participants to balance intellectual inquiry with compassion and cultivate inner peace.

The visit is part of the ongoing Zanskar KarGön Summer Philosophical Symposium 2025 and underscores the region’s role in preserving Tibetan Buddhism, fostering interfaith dialogue, and enriching spiritual and ethical education.
