New Delhi, June 21, 2025 – Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has announced a major relief package for mango farmers in Karnataka. The Central and State governments will jointly bear the burden of price differences for mangoes, particularly the Totapuri variety, which has seen steep price drops in recent weeks.
Relief for 2.5 Lakh Metric Tonnes of Mangoes
The government has approved a plan to compensate mango farmers for 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes. This decision was taken during a video conference between Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Karnataka Agriculture Minister Shri N. Chaluvaraya Swamy. Union Agriculture Secretary Shri Devesh Chaturvedi also participated in the meeting.
Central-State Cost Sharing
The compensation will be provided under a central scheme where the price difference from the regular market rate will be equally shared by both the Central and State governments. This relief specifically targets Totapuri mango farmers who have suffered economic losses due to market fluctuations.
Proactive State Proposal
The Karnataka government had earlier submitted a formal proposal highlighting the fall in prices of tomatoes and mangoes. While tomato prices have since stabilized, the focus remains on supporting mango producers. The total estimated mango production in Karnataka this season stands at over 10 lakh metric tonnes.
Ministerial Statements
Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister thanked the Union Minister for his swift action, stating, “This decision brings timely relief to thousands of mango-producing families in Karnataka.”
Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh reiterated the Centre’s commitment to supporting India’s farmers and strengthening agricultural resilience through timely interventions and cooperative federalism.
