President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu unveiled and ceremoniously flagged off the trophies for the Durand Cup Tournament 2025 during a special event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.
In her address, the President emphasized that sports are more than games—they instill values like discipline, determination, and teamwork. She highlighted how sports uniquely bind individuals, communities, and even nations together, noting the immense pride felt across India when the national flag is raised at global sporting events.
Focusing on football, the President acknowledged its deep-rooted popularity in India, describing it as not just a sport, but a powerful passion. She noted that football demands strategy, stamina, and seamless collaboration—qualities that mirror the essence of nation-building.
She also praised tournaments like the Durand Cup for nurturing young talent and providing a meaningful platform for the next generation of Indian footballers. The President specifically appreciated the efforts of the Indian Armed Forces in preserving and promoting the legacy of the Durand Cup, one of Asia’s oldest and most respected football tournaments.
