Coal India & NSTFDC Sign MoU to Empower 30,000 Tribal Students in EMRS

Coal India Partners with Tribal Affairs Ministry for EMRS Upgrade

In a landmark initiative, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Coal India Limited (CIL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) to upgrade infrastructure and capacity in 76 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha.

Key Provisions Under the MoU

  • Installation of 1,200 computers and 1,200 UPS units
  • Distribution of 110 tablets
  • Deployment of 420 sanitary pad vending machines and 420 incinerators
  • Career counselling & mentorship for over 6,200 Class 10 and 12 students

CIL has sanctioned ₹10 crore for the project, which will be implemented by NSTFDC in a time-bound manner.

Benefits for Tribal Students

More than 30,000 tribal students are expected to benefit from the program. The project aims to:

  • Bridge the digital divide by setting up computer labs and promoting STEM learning
  • Improve menstrual health & hygiene to enhance retention of girl students
  • Provide mentorship to help students access higher education and job opportunities

Leaders Welcome the Initiative

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram welcomed CIL’s CSR support and urged more companies to step forward. Union Coal & Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy highlighted that education, women’s empowerment, and healthcare are priority CSR areas, and this partnership will expand their impact.
