NHRC Intervenes in Shocking Ganjam Case
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about a 20-year-old female college student who was allegedly gang-raped by 10 men on Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district on 15th June 2025.
The report states that the victim, accompanied by a male friend, was attacked during a festival outing. The accused allegedly overpowered her friend and sexually assaulted her.
Notices to Odisha Authorities
The NHRC has issued notices to Odisha’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The report should include investigation status, victim’s health updates, and any counseling or compensation provided.
Current Status
According to the media report dated 16th June 2025, the victim was sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for medical examination. Police have reportedly detained seven suspects so far.
The NHRC emphasized that if the media account is accurate, it highlights a grave violation of human rights.
