NHRC Issues Notice to Odisha Authorities Over Gopalpur Gang Rape Case
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports alleging the gang rape of a 20-year-old female college student at Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha’s Ganjam District on 15 June 2025. The incident reportedly occurred while the victim was at the beach with a male friend to celebrate a festival. A group of around 10 men allegedly overpowered her companion and sexually assaulted her.
Terming the report a serious matter of human rights violation, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Odisha. They have been asked to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has asked for specific details including the status of the investigation, the condition and medical treatment of the victim, and any compensation or counseling support provided by state authorities.
According to a media report dated 16 June 2025, the victim was sent for medical examination at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Police have reportedly detained seven suspects connected to the case.
The Commission’s intervention underscores the importance of prompt action and accountability in cases involving gender-based violence and protection of human rights.
