Indian Navy to Commission Advanced Stealth Frigate ‘Tamal’ in Russia

Indian Navy Stealth Frigate Tamal

New Delhi, June 22, 2025 – The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth multi-role frigate, Tamal, on July 1, 2025 at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. The event will be presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, alongside senior Indian and Russian defence officials.

Tamal: A Next-Gen Naval Asset

‘Tamal’ is the eighth frigate of the Krivak class and second of the upgraded Tushil class, which succeeds the Talwar and Teg classes. It represents a major leap in capability with 26% indigenous components, including the powerful BrahMos cruise missile system.

Built with Indo-Russian Collaboration

Constructed under the close supervision of Indian specialists in Kaliningrad, Tamal reflects India’s growing defense capabilities and the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The ship integrates advanced technologies from Indian companies like BEL, BrahMos Aerospace, Tata Nova, Elcome Marine, and others.

Combat and Surveillance Capabilities

The 125-meter long, 3,900-tonne warship features:

  • BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
  • Vertical launch surface-to-air missiles
  • 100mm improved main gun and 30mm CIWS
  • EO/IR systems, heavyweight torpedoes, and ASW rockets
  • Network Centric Warfare and Electronic Warfare Suite

It also supports advanced multi-role helicopters, air early warning, and sonar technologies such as HUMSA NG Mk II.

High-Performance Design

Tamal boasts stealth-enhanced hull design, extended endurance, and a top speed of over 30 knots. It is the last major warship to be procured from abroad under the current defense strategy.

A Symbol of Strategic Partnership

The ship’s mascot is inspired by both Jambavant from Indian mythology and the Eurasian Brown Bear, symbolizing Indo-Russian unity. Its motto, “Sarvada Sarvatra Vijaya” (Victorious Always Everywhere), reflects the Indian Navy’s unwavering operational commitment.

To Join the Western Fleet

Upon commissioning, Tamal will serve under the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet—also known as the “Sword Arm”—and will play a key role in safeguarding national maritime interests under a future-ready naval doctrine.
