India-Africa Commemorative Pillar Unveiled in Kenya to Honour WWI Heroes

On June 23, 2025, Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth and the Cabinet Secretary for Defence of the Republic of Kenya, Ms. Roselinda Soipan Tuya, EGH, jointly unveiled the India-Africa Commemorative Pillar at Mile 27, Taita Taveta County, Kenya. The memorial honors the unknown Indian and African soldiers who gave their lives during World War I in the East African campaign.

This international initiative was conceived by the High Commission of India in Kenya and brought to life with financial support from the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Its successful execution was made possible in close collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces and local officials of Taita Taveta County.

The commemorative pillar stands as a symbol of shared history, valor, and sacrifice, strengthening the longstanding military and strategic bond between India and Kenya. It also reflects the countries’ mutual respect, shared values, and commitment to promoting peace and global stability.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from both nations, including senior leaders from the Kenya Defence Forces, representatives of Taita Taveta County, Indian Defence Ministry delegates, and members of the diplomatic and military community.

This tribute serves as a lasting legacy, reminding future generations of the bravery and unity displayed by Indian and African soldiers a century ago on a distant battlefield.
