Gujarat’s Bag ATM Initiative Crosses 1 Lakh Cloth Bags to Promote Plastic-Free Living

In a bold effort to reduce single-use plastic, over 1 lakh citizens in Gujarat have embraced cloth bags distributed through automated “Bag ATM” vending machines across the state—within just 200 days of launch.

These Bag ATMs are part of a larger state-led initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. On the occasion of World Environment Day this year, Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel launched 260 new cloth bag vending machines, reinforcing the campaign for a “Plastic-Free India.”

Located at major temples such as Ambaji, Somnath, Dwarka, Shamlaji, Salangpur, and ISKCON, the vending machines offer cloth bags for ₹5 or ₹10, payable via coin or QR code. These bags are used to distribute offerings, ensuring that even traditional rituals align with eco-conscious practices.

So far, over 20,000 cloth bags have been distributed via these newly installed machines. The initiative not only curbs plastic use but also empowers women—since all the bags are procured from self-help groups run by women, creating livelihood opportunities and fostering self-reliance.

The campaign extends beyond temples. In cities like Ahmedabad and Surat, Bag ATMs have been installed in markets, pilgrimage centers, hospitals, and public gardens. Additionally, paper bag vending machines have been set up in 20 hospitals in Ahmedabad, allowing visitors to access eco-friendly options at medical shops.

To track the usage of these machines in real time, the government has also developed the “Pratigya Live Dashboard” available at https://pwm.gpcb.gov.in:8443, offering transparent data on cloth bag distribution across the state.

The movement also aligns with the global observance of “International Plastic Bag Free Day” on July 3, reinforcing Gujarat’s commitment to sustainable practices and a cleaner future for all.
