More Than Crime: New Evaluation Metrics for Police Stations
The Gujarat Police have changed how police stations are evaluated. Traditionally judged on crime figures alone, stations will now also be assessed on how well they serve the public. This reform follows directives from DGP Vikas Sahay and the DG-IG Conference 2024.
What the New System Measures
The ranking will include approximately 40 citizen-friendly parameters, among them:
- Prompt grievance redressal
- Senior citizen visits by SHE teams
- Community policing programs like ‘Teen Vaat Tamari, Teen Vaat Amari’ and ‘Tera Tujko Arpan’
- Cleanliness, hygienic toilets for women, drinking water, and waiting areas for citizens
- CCTV coverage, fire safety equipment, tree plantations, and the use of official contact numbers by police personnel.
Frequency & Recognition of Rankings
Evaluations will be conducted **twice a year** in both city and district police stations. The **top three** stations in each area will receive certificates of appreciation from the State Police Chief.
Why This Change Matters
This move marks a shift from focusing solely on crime suppression to improving public trust, accountability, and service delivery. By recognizing police stations based on citizen satisfaction and amenities, the government hopes to foster healthier competition and better community relationships.
Expectations & Challenges Going Forward
While the initiative has been welcomed, results will depend on implementation. Key challenges include ensuring all stations meet basic facility standards, training staff for behaviour & responsiveness, and maintaining consistency in evaluations. Reliable data collection and transparency will be crucial.
