Govt Fast-Tracks Modernisation of Akashvani & Doordarshan Kendras Nationwide
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has launched a ₹2,539.61 crore Central Sector initiative—known as the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) scheme—to modernise state-run radio and television centres across India during 2021–26.
Comprehensive Upgrade Plan
The BIND scheme focuses on:
- Digitalisation and modernisation of broadcasting equipment
- Replacement of outdated systems
- Upgradation of studio and transmitter infrastructure
- Adoption of new technologies and digital workflows
These enhancements aim to strengthen public broadcasting and improve quality, reach, and resilience.
Focus on Bihar and Regional Centres
Bihar is among the key beneficiaries, with ₹64.56 crore allocated for Akashvani Kendras and ₹4.31 crore for Doordarshan Kendras in the state. Similar upgradation plans are underway in every state.
Strengthening Public Service Broadcasting
According to Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan, the BIND initiative seeks to ensure that AIR and DD stay technologically relevant amid rapidly evolving media patterns and increasing private digital competition in underserved and rural areas.
Future Impact
By enhancing equipment, studios, and digital infrastructure, the scheme is set to:
- Expand radio/TV coverage across remote geographies
- Ensure high-quality broadcast standards
- Promote rich local content and cultural programming
- Build workflows capable of agile digital delivery
This comprehensive investment reaffirms the government’s commitment to revamping public broadcasting and strengthening media reach for all citizens.
