Ahmedabad Debuts India’s First On‑Route Solar Charging Station for AMTS Electric Buses

A Green Milestone in Public Transport

On July 19, 2025, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, with Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, inaugurated India’s first **on-route solar EV charging station** for AMTS buses at RTO Circle. Powered by a 120‑kW solar setup and equipped with high-capacity chargers (240 kW & 180 kW), the station can serve **40–45 buses daily** using clean energy.

Fuel & Emission Savings

Traditionally, AMTS buses often traveled empty to distant depots to recharge—costing the city around ₹60 lakh annually in extra mileage. The new station ensures on-route top-ups, translating to estimated savings of **₹1 crore per year**, along with a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Scalable & Sustainable

The project forms part of Phase 2 of the CAPACITIES initiative, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. Beyond the RTO station, similar solar charging units are planned across other locations, including Naranpura and Vastral. AMC targets a rollout of **34 solar-powered EV stations citywide**, aligning with its broader green transport goals.

Integrating Urban Eco Projects

Managed by AMC’s Air Quality Management Cell, this initiative complements a suite of green projects—urban forests, CNG crematorium furnaces, mechanical parking, and bus electrification (200 BRTS buses already supported). The solar depot is the latest step toward reducing Ahmedabad’s urban carbon footprint.

Final Word

Ahmedabad’s new on-route solar charging station sets a national precedent—demonstrating how renewable energy can efficiently power public transport. With robust emissions savings and public benefit, it’s a model for sustainable urban mobility nationwide.
